I was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania and am one of four children to my parents as well as one of 47 first cousins in all. Therein began my love of working with children and families.
After 12 years of experience in the mental health arena and taking my cues from clients I have learned to trust in their judgment and adapt my style to their needs. I have established the philosophy that my commitment to the therapeutic work overrides any devotion to a single theory, and I rely on pragmatic approaches that best fit the needs of the client based on previous clinical experience and valid research. I prefer an eclectic approach in assisting clients to create satisfying lives, communicating more effectively, identifying strengths and improving overall emotional health.
As an added benefit I earned a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy, from University of Illinois at Chicago, which often compliments my work with clients. Using art therapy as either a primary or an adjunctive therapy allows for the client to express emotions through a creative process for a better understanding of themselves and increased insights not otherwise recognized. I have had opportunities to begin art therapy programs in domestic violence shelters and provide art therapy services in head start programs, psychiatric hospitals as well as outpatient facilities.
